Outdoor Activities in Coachella Valley

Outdoor adventures are one of the major reasons why people visit the Coachella Valley. This area’s extraordinary beauty will entice you to try new outdoor activities. There are endless options, so everyone in your group can find something they enjoy. To get you started, here are some of the more popular options.

Amazing outdoor activities in Coachella Valley

Many of the spectacular views in Coachella Valley can be seen on foot. Hiking is one of the most amazing and budget-friendly outdoor activities you can do here. The cooler winter and spring months are ideal for exploring the trails closer to sea level, such as Joshua Tree, one of the more famous National Parks. The hotter summer and fall months are a great time to venture upwards to cooler, higher altitudes. Plan your own hike or hire a guide to learn more about the area.

If you have mixed-level hikers in your travel party or even non-hikers, you can still take the whole group up to Mt. San Jacinto State Park on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The tram starts at the floor of the Coachella Valley. At the top, you can enjoy the breathtaking views with a leisurely ramble or while dining at the mountain station restaurant. More experienced hikers can make the trek to San Jacinto Peak at 10, 384 feet.

Off-Road Tours

Driving off-road is fun for all ages! Companies throughout the valley offer Jeep, ATV, and Hummer outdoor tours to get your adrenaline pumping. Are you looking for a slower pace? You can even find covered wagon tours and see the area like early settlers did.

Horseback Rides

Horseback riding is one of the more popular outdoor things to do in Coachella Valley. Stables and ranches offer horseback riding tours guaranteed to bring out your inner cowboy or cowgirl while taking in spectacular views. You’ll see the best of Coachella Valley from the vantage point of the early settlers.

Sporting Events

Catching a sporting event in the Valley is a great way to get entertainment and fresh air simultaneously! The Desert International Horse Park hosts world-renowned equestrian competitions. You can watch baseball players before they turn professional at one of the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League games. Or, watch a unique sport by attending a polo match at either Eldorado or Empire Polo Clubs. Top international polo players travel here to play in some of the world’s most thrilling and competitive matches.

The Valley is a popular destination for golf, boasting over 100 golf courses. Combine that with more than 300 days of sunshine, and it is a recipe for fantastic golf throughout the year. Courses even host PGA and LPGA events, so you can be assured they are top-notch.

City Strolls

The Coachella Valley is home to several charming cities and towns, including Palm Desert, Indio, Palm Springs, Coachella, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, and Cathedral City. They are all smaller in size, with populations of less than 100,000. Strolling around a town and stepping in and out of shops and restaurants can give you an excellent feel for the area.

Tour the desert on two wheels by packing your bicycle. If you travel light, there are plenty of places to rent bikes. Choose from road or trail biking. There are miles of paths and trails for both! If you need a little assistance, e-bikes are a popular option to get around.

Wildlife Viewing

Take in some spectacular wildlife at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, rated one of the 10 best zoos in the U.S. You can feed a giraffe or stroll amongst the kangaroos. The zoo also hosts a unique Coachella Valley adventure, included with your admission ticket, that allows you to stroll through the pristine nature preserve trail system of the Living Desert. Enjoy a bird walk at the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center and learn about the great work they are doing rehabilitating orphaned and injured wild birds.

There is no shortage of outdoor things to do in Coachella Valley. So, pack your sunscreen and water bottle, and head outside for a unique Coachella Valley adventure!
